The fishing village of Hout Bay comes alive with the start of the Oceana Hout Bay Seafood Festival.
The festival kicks-off on Heritage Day, 24 September and continues until Sunday 28 September with a variety of events in and around Hout Bay.
Residents of this quaint fishing village will wake up to the sound of the starter’s gun as the tri-athletes set off on a swimming, running and cycling challenge. The event starts with a plunge into the water at 7.45am followed by a run through the streets of Hout Bay and finishing with a cycling challenge.
The official programme gets underway with the Hout Bay Heritage parade at 11.15 just off Baviaanskloof Road opposite the post office. The parade will be followed by the re-enactment of the 1795 ‘Battle of Hout Bay’ in the bay at about 12h00 and a Heritage Day picnic and concert at Kronendal Primary School at 13.00.
All the events include prominent locals from all genres to showcase the local community’s talents.
Hout Bay will be rocking with a number of events over the five days and what is a seafood festival without a seafood-themed “Restaurant Week”. A series of cookery demonstrations by Hout Bay’s leading chefs and restaurateurs starring a line-up of the Bay’s most popular food personalities paired in teams of two, will keep audiences entranced.
The organizing committee has challenged local chefs to create brilliant original recipes using sustainable, SASSI green-listed seafood.
The Oceana Hout Bay Seafood Festival includes a number of sports events, cultural, arts and music events, concerts, ‘Hout Bay’s Got Talent’, dance and drama productions as well as the Lucky Star 5-a-side football, 6-a-side cricket games as well as a Nav Challenge in and around the bay. Indigenous Games are also part of the impressive list of events planned.
One of the largest attractions will be the re-enactment of the Battle of Hout Bay, with a replica of HMS Echo (in real life the V&A-based Spirit of Victoria) arriving into the bay to fire her cannons.
Three sets of cannons around the Bay, including the world’s oldest battery of original working guns at East Fort, will retaliate sending the brave little frigate scurrying off to safety.
30 people will be able to join the ‘fight’ aboard the ‘HMS Echo’, at R200 per person. The one-and-a-half hour cruise includes all the excitement of the cannons on board being fired. To book contact Natasha on 021 418 3234 or email – natasha@waterfrontadventures.co.za.
